For over a decade, Ledger has produced the most successful hardware wallet, and for a good reason, its dedication to secure self-custody. But the blockchain ecosystem is evolving, and thus to keep your digital assets safe and cater to the range of platforms and protocols available, hardware must evolve along with it.
Ledger understands how this new era of blockchain apps and tools needs hardware that complements it seamlessly. With the launch of Ledger Stax, Ledger unveiled the next generation of hardware wallets featuring the same uncompromising security, but with an improved user experience. Ledger Stax is a first-of-its-kind device, featuring a Secure E Ink® touchscreen driven directly by the Secure Element.
Now, Ledger presents a new device offering the best of both worlds: uncompromising security with a simple user experience at an attractive price point. Meet Ledger Flex: the new standard of signing devices providing a solution for digital assets security and proof of you.
Ledger Flex: The New Standard for Digital Asset Security
Launching on July 26th, 2024, Ledger Flex is the new entry point into Ledger’s next-generation hardware, offering secure self-custody with an improved user experience—and at an attractive price point, retailing at $249.
Ledger Flex is an homage to the iconic black and steel motif featured on Ledger devices for a decade, a reminder of Ledger’s heritage of uncompromising security.
“After a decade of setting the standard for security and self-custody in crypto and digital assets, I’m proud to say we’re raising the bar again,” says Pascal Gauthier, Chairman & CEO of Ledger. “By launching both Ledger Flex and Ledger Stax this year, we’re redefining the experience of self-custody. Ledger devices already secure more than 20% of the world’s digital assets, and our new secure touchscreen category will make self-custody more accessible than ever before for more consumers and enterprises.”
Following Ledger Stax, Ledger Flex is the new standard in the next generation of signing devices. So, let’s dive into Ledger Flex’s next-generation features.
Secure E Ink® Touchscreen
To ensure a hardware device’s security, it must have three key elements: a secure enclave, encryption within that enclave, and a secure screen. While Ledger devices all benefit from a secure screen, Ledger Stax and Ledger Flex are the only products in the world with secure touchscreens, giving them a unique edge in protecting both your digital value and your identity.
Ledger Flex uses a Secure Element chip with CC EAL 6+ certification, encrypts information on that chip using Ledger’s custom OS, and drives its Secure E Ink® touchscreen directly by the Secure Element. That’s why your Ledger Flex’s E Ink touchscreen is secure but your smartphone or laptop’s screen is vulnerable to malware. In short, Ledger devices bring security to your inherently insecure devices, such as laptops and smartphones.
“Without a secure screen, you are not secure. Period. The easy-to-use secure touchscreens of Ledger Stax and Ledger Flex are the only truly secure touchscreens in the world, battle-tested by the Donjon and third parties. With growing digital ownership and AI fakes, digital asset security, proof-of-humanity, and proof-of identity is more crucial than ever. Ledger Stax and Ledger Flex are the secure touchscreens to go with the insecure touchscreen in your pocket.” – Ian Rogers, Chief Experience Officer at Ledger.
Ledger Flex also features a much larger display than the last generation of devices at 2.8” and like Ledger Stax, Ledger Flex lets you set your favorite NFT, meme, photo, or any other image as your lock screen—and the image will stay visible even when the device is on standby!
Proof of You
The rapid advancement of AI pushes provenance to the forefront of technology’s biggest challenges, and trusting what you see becomes increasingly difficult. Where AI creates abundance, the blockchain is a natural partner by creating scarcity and authenticity.
Secure signing devices are key to a future where Proof of You becomes essential — as more of our value becomes digitized, society will need trusted methods to prove identity.
After a decade of building devices to secure digital assets, Ledger is extending that security model to create next-generation devices that protect your digital identity and provide Proof of You. This begins with a new app for Ledger Stax and Ledger Flex: Ledger Security Key, offering Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), and Passkey capabilities to provide a secure and convenient alternative to traditional passwords, eliminating phishing from your security risk factors.
With Ledger Security Key, you can use your Ledger wallet to log in without inputting your password or use a less secure 2FA such as a browser extension or SMS. This feature is built on the open FIDO 2 specification, ensuring decentralized access across platforms. It’s also compatible with Amazon, Binance, Coinbase, your favorite social media accounts, Google, and much more. Simply tap your Ledger Flex or Ledger Stax on your phone to log in to supported services, or connect it via USB to your laptop or PC.
Should I Get Ledger Flex or Ledger Stax?
Whether you choose Ledger Flex or Ledger Stax, you’ll benefit from Ledger’s proven security model, plus the UX improvements of the next generation of devices.
They each benefit from Secure E Ink® touchscreens driven by a Secure Element chip and their unmatched energy efficiency means their batteries can last for weeks or even months on one charge. Both devices also offer USB C ports, Bluetooth, and NFC capabilities and are compatible with the Security Key App. And of course, both have customizable lock screens, allowing you to display your favorite image or NFT.
However, there are some key differences to note.
Ledger Stax was designed by Tony Fadell, the Godfather of the iPod, and its 3.7” display curved E Ink touchscreen lets you customize the spine as well as the lock screen. It’s the device for users who want to manage multiple hardware wallets, with in-built magnets allowing you to stack multiple Ledger Stax devices together. Ledger Stax is a premium hardware wallet with next-generation features that retails at $399.
Ledger Flex’s secure E Ink® touchscreen is smaller than Ledger Stax’s (at 2.8”) and is flat rather than curved, meaning only its lock screen is customizable. Ledger Flex’s in-built magnets also have a different role, reserved for attaching handy screen protectors and accessories rather than stacking multiple devices. The final difference lies in the price, as Ledger Flex retails for $249.
With the launch of Ledger Flex, there’s a Ledger available at a price point for everyone; from the Ledger Nano S Plus at $79 and the Ledger Nano X, to Ledger Flex at $249 and Ledger Stax at $399. Whether you’re a crypto novice or an experienced trader, there’s a Ledger device for you.
