Bitcoin Pizza Day: Ledger Nano S Limited Edition
Today crypto-enthusiasts around the world are celebrating the eighth anniversary of the first, documented real-world Bitcoin transaction.
Eight years ago today, back when no mainstream retailer accepted Bitcoin, programmer Laszlo Hanyecz bought two pizzas for 10,000 BTC. At the time, transaction was worth $41. Today, it would be worth more than $84 million.
Pizza Day is a marker of just how far and how quickly the crypto asset space has developed. Since that first transaction, digital currencies have become accepted across a wide variety of mainstream outlets. Some have increased substantially in value, and digital assets such as cryptocurrencies are now attracting the interest of major institutional investors.
While Ledger continues to work to support this innovation, whether through expanding our already market-leading coin coverage, updating our desktop and mobile applications to improve the user experience, or launching our enterprise solution, Ledger Vault, bringing digital assets to a whole new category of investor. we’re proud to be rooted in the tight-knit, dedicated crypto community, so we’ve decided to join this year’s celebrations by releasing a Pizza Day Limited Edition of the Nano S.
The Ledger team in our Vierzon workshop has assembled this exclusive range of wallets, which is available from today on our website. The limited edition has the same features as the standard Nano S, but with some thematic design twists.
We reached out to Laszlo, and were happy to receive his go-ahead to develop these Pizza Day limited edition wallets. He offered his perspective on how far the world of Bitcoin has come and how important a hardware wallet is to ensure you’re storing your assets safely: “Bitcoin was just a fun hobby project for me 8 years ago. When I paid 10,000 BTC for two pizzas I had no idea that Bitcoin would eventually become as popular as it is today, with people using it for real world transactions every day. One of the challenges to mainstream adoption is the learning curve involved in understanding how to store and use Bitcoin securely and this Limited Edition Ledger device is a great way to get started safely.”
Pizza Day is a day to reflect how far we’ve come, how digital assets have moved from niche to mainstream, and celebrate the work of the community in getting this far. But it’s also a reminder that the world of crypto continues to move at pace, and that our most exciting and significant work may be ahead of us.
Wishing you a Happy Pizza Day,
The Ledger Team
